This beautiful sculpted piece was inspired by the walks I take on the beach. The moon shells that had washed ashore always caught my eye. I thought of the mythical spirits that live in the sea, and what would one look like if it was to appear in the shell. Cast in high quality concrete, this magical piece can be on your office desk, in your altar, or a place in your garden. Where ever it goes it will add a presence of beauty and delight.

Combining symbolism from Mesoamerican, ancient Greek and Christian cultures, the overall shape of this piece is a cross, but a cross that’s in the process of transforming into a higher state. The intertwined snakes, the caduceus, represent life, death and rebirth. They also are a representation of sexuality; they enclose a yoni, the passageway through which we all enter life. The enlightened eye at the top oversees all.

Like the sun, this eye is sending out golden rays of light. The rays represent positive rays of intention. I sculpted this as a protective piece, a reminder to meditate on healing rays of energy surrounding my eye and preserving my sight. The circle represents harmony, completion, the whole and the multilayered nature of the rays symbolizes the complexity of life.

Here I used symbols from many traditions: the snake is Kundalini energy rising up the spine, the eye in the pyramid is the Egyptian Eye of Horus or the early Christian Trinity or the Eye of Providence. This piece represents the awakening of one’s sight to a higher order, an arrow into the universe.
When I began to deal with vision loss I sometimes thought of it as a house on fire, being consumed, which is where this image came from. In Asian art, spiritual masters are often surrounded by a halo of flames, as is this eye. The pyramid with inset eye represents the all-seeing Eye of Horus. The inverted blue triangle is a reflection of the golden triangle above it and symbolizes the duality of life.

When sculpting I often feel as though I have eyes in my hands, and that has been very useful as my sight has waned. The open hand is an ancient symbol, used in Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Jewish and Islamic religions (the “hamsa,” used to ward off the evil eye). When I finished this piece, I looked at it and it reminded me of a tarot card from some mysterious deck.

In the early days of my vision loss I would often have the image of some demon swallowing my eyesight. Similarly, the ancient Chinese believed that a lunar eclipse was the result of a dragon eating the moon. In this piece, the snake is eating the eye and the crystals represent the last glistening moment of light before darkness descends. The discs behind the snake represent the cycles and interconnectedness of life.
