I Sculpted the Shape Shifter face after studying the Olmecs, who lived 2,500 years ago in the Yucatan Peninsula. Every native culture in the Western Hemisphere had a strong belief in the possibility of shifting shape for greater communication with the mystical. The Olmecs had a deep respect for animal spirits, especially the Jaguar, an animal that is sleek, beautiful and able to blend with the shadows and hunt in the dark. So for the Olmecs, to shape-shift into a Jaguar was a supreme act of the sacred. This face is doing just that -- it is "shifting shape" into a Jaguar, a visual metaphor for the transformative powers that exist in all of us.
